M2M Zone
At ESC Silicon Valley, a DESIGN West Summit
March 26-29, 2012  •  McEnery Convention Center, San Jose, CA

M2M is known by many names: Embedded Internet, Internet of Things, Connected Devices, Intelligent Systems.  The underlying message is connectivity.

Universal Connectivity is here. You will be hard pressed to find areas in our everyday life where connectivity does not exist. Embedded Hardware and Software are fueling the growth of vertical markets and creating new applications and markets. The Internet is forcing legacy embedded systems to get connected. The time of standalone embedded electrical or electronic devices is fast receding, opening the door to an exciting new era of unforeseen applications and opportunity, from simple remote home monitoring to full‐scale, smart‐grid power control. From table lamps, refrigerators and home media, to automotive, medical, industrial and scientific, Embedded Systems will soon employ multiple networks and cloud-hosted applications.

This connectedness of everything has many enablers, drivers, implications and challenges. The Internet is a common enablement thread, with its global reach, but so too are the many low‐power wireless and sensor that enable localized control and monitoring. The main driver remains our ever‐present need for control and knowledge of our environment and the high monetary stakes therein, while the implications for designers are manifest throughout the design, from concept, hardware and software choices, through to final layout and connectivity implementation.

As systems become increasingly connected, their designers are more concerned than ever with issues of connectivity and security. The challenges too are plentiful. From system partitioning to allow for future connectivity options, to security through to low‐cost design and software hooks for applications that have yet to be envisioned that can take advantage of the system’s connected state.

The M2M Zone, on the ESC Silicon Valley / DESIGN West show floor, is an opportunity for companies to demonstrate their solutions around connectivity.
